I was about to make a hail post, but I will piggy back on this. We had a big storm in Calgary recently and it was...really bad.

some of my ag/farm clients in the Dakotas occasionally get hit pretty hard - like sand blasting your barn with golf balls...

Here in Burque the hail usually looks like snow. My Azera was totalled and I got a new roof through State Farm two years ago from hail between grape and golfball sized hail. Thankfully the pic was as big as they got. All is well! The GS looks fine!

Story time!

Ag crop i nsurance claims for hail damage led to the creation of the National Agricul t ure Imagery Program. The National Ag Insurance Program was dealing with a lot of loss claims due to hail damage. Then a smart fellow used GIS to map out the location of the policies and the location of the claims. He noticed that there was an interesting distribution to the claims. Often, one farmer would make a claim but his neighbors wouldn’t. This was odd for a couple of reasons. First, is the expectation that a natural event would be more widespread and would affect more than one farmer’s fields. Second, claims had to have photographic evidence.

The GIS guy had access to satellite imagery in some locations. From the relatively low-resolution images, he was able to determine that on some of the losses, there was no evidence of the fields ever being planted!

So, through aerial imagery and geospatial analysis, NAIP discovered that some of their agents were writing policies on fields that weren’t planted, were collaborating with those farmers to fake claims, then were receiving kickbacks when the claims were paid.

To combat this, the NAIP was created. I t has been an excellent source of   satellite and aerial imagery ever since.

There’s a clearinghouse for such data at https://datagateway.nrcs.usda.gov/GDGOrder.aspx

We had a leaking roof a few years ago, so I called a roofer. He came out and gave the leak a quick patch, and said, “You need a new roof, but you insurance will pay for it.” How, I asked? He said that in TX you have one year from the date of a hail storm to claim damage, and there was still about a week left since the last documented hail storm. And he said that he noticed some hail damage. So, we got a new roof, and the insurance paid for (most of) it.

My rule of thumb is if the hail bounces off of the concrete, you are fine. If it explodes when it hits the concrete. you will be dented. If it breaks the concrete, good luck......

Looked a bit threatening from little pea size to big pea sized. Thankfully that was that. I can never complain abt ABQ climate, other than needing some rain. Hail is usually small here.

Same deal here. Need x amount of hits per given area. I’m sure I’ll hit that every few years.

My parents just replaced the roof on their house for the first time, it was built in 91. I think they got their money out of it.
